Vitamins and minerals and their composition and function
A distinction is made between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. The vitamins, which are identified by their names with different letters, only occur in living nature and must therefore be formed by plants, bacteria and animals. Well-known members of the vitamin group include vitamins A, B2, B6 and B12 as well as vitamins C, D, E and K. Vitamin D is a member of the vitamin group that can be produced by the human organism itself - for example through the effect of UV rays on the skin. Minerals (also known as minerals) are also inorganic nutrients.
This class of substances is found in human, animal and plant organisms. In contrast to vitamins, minerals are less sensitive to heat, cold or light. Like vitamins, minerals are also required for various bodily functions such as bone formation through calcium. Minerals are dissolved in liquids or in trace form. Well-known representatives of this class of substances include magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, copper and phosphorus. As vitamins and minerals are essential for the diverse functions of the human organism, they must be ingested in sufficient quantities through the diet. If there is a deficiency here, this can lead to health problems. Additional supplementation of vitamins and minerals via high-quality dietary supplements is therefore recommended.
Vitamins and minerals as dietary supplements - all options at a glance
If the recommended amount of vitamins and minerals cannot be obtained from the regular diet, dietary supplements are recommended. Corresponding combinations of active ingredients such as multivitamin preparations in capsule, tablet or powder form usually contain a mix of the most important vitamins such as vitamins A, B2 and B6 as well as C and E. Vitamin A, for example, is necessary for full visual function and promotes cell growth and skin regeneration. The vitamins of the B group, on the other hand, are important for the macronutrient metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Vitamin C supports the body's immune system and vitamin E primarily has an antioxidant effect. The active ingredient combinations of vitamin D and vitamin K2 should also be supplemented, especially in the winter months - the former is important for functional mineral absorption and the latter ensures improved absorption of vitamin D. The additional intake of magnesium, which ensures normal muscle contraction and prevents muscle cramps, is particularly important for athletes. When it comes to minerals, the active ingredient combination ZMA, which contains zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6 and ensures normal hormone function and improves sleep quality, is particularly suitable as a dietary supplement.
